Shepherds Pie is a classic comforting dish featuring savory ground meat and vegetables topped with creamy mashed potatoes and baked to golden perfection.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground lamb (or ground beef for cottage pie)
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 medium carrots, diced
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef or lamb broth
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 4 cups mashed potatoes
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 tbsp olive oil

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onions and garlic, sauté until translucent.
  3. Add ground lamb and cook until browned. Drain excess fat if needed.
  4. Stir in carrots, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, and broth. Simmer for 10 minutes until thickened.
  5. Add frozen peas, salt, and pepper, and mix well.
  6. Transfer the meat mixture to a baking dish and spread evenly.
  7. Top with mashed potatoes, smoothing the surface and dot with butter.
  8. Bake in preheated oven for 20-25 minutes until the top is golden brown.
  9. Let cool 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

For extra flavor, sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese on top before baking or add a dash of fresh thyme to the meat mixture.
