Beautiful French Toast Bake on white plate

This French Toast Bake is a delicious and easy-to-make breakfast casserole featuring custardy bread soaked in a rich egg mixture and baked to golden perfection. Perfect for busy mornings or brunch gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 cups day-old bread, cubed (such as brioche or French bread)
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar (for topping)
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional, for topping)
  • Butter or non-stick spray (for greasing the baking dish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.
  2. Place the cubed bread in the prepared baking dish evenly.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined.
  4. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread cubes, gently pressing down to ensure the bread soaks up the custard.
  5. Cover the dish with foil and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight for best results.
  6. Before baking, sprinkle the top with brown sugar and chopped nuts if using.
  7. Bake uncovered for 45 to 50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the custard is set in the center.
  8. Remove from oven and let cool for a few minutes before serving. Optionally, drizzle with maple syrup or a dusting of powdered sugar.

Notes

For a richer flavor, try adding a splash of rum or orange liqueur to the custard mixture or serve with fresh berries for added freshness.
