Homemade Crispy Onion Rings

These homemade crispy onion rings feature a perfectly crunchy coating and tender onions inside, making them an ideal snack or side dish for any occasion.

  • 2 large yellow onions, sliced into 1/2-inch rings
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 1/2 cups panko breadcrumbs
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions

  1. Separate onion slices into rings and set aside.
  2. In a medium bowl, mix flour, baking powder, salt, and black pepper.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together buttermilk and egg.
  4. Dip each onion ring first into the flour mixture, then into the buttermilk mixture, and finally coat with panko breadcrumbs.
  5. Heat vegetable oil in a deep pan or fryer to 350°F (175°C).
  6. Fry onion rings in batches for 2-3 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.
  7. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  8. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

For extra flavor, add a pinch of smoked paprika or cayenne pepper to the flour mixture. Serve with spicy mayo or classic ketchup for dipping.
