Close-up of crispy homemade mozzarella sticks

Crispy on the outside and gooey on the inside, these homemade mozzarella sticks are an irresistible appetizer perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 mozzarella string cheese sticks
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup Italian-style breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • Marinara sauce, for serving

Instructions

  1. Cut each mozzarella string cheese stick in half to create shorter sticks and freeze them for at least 1 hour.
  2. Place flour in one shallow bowl. Beat eggs in a second shallow bowl. In a third bowl, combine breadcrumbs, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
  3. Dip each frozen mozzarella stick into flour, shaking off excess, then into the beaten eggs, and finally coat thoroughly with the breadcrumb mixture.
  4. For extra crispiness, repeat the egg and breadcrumb coating once more.
  5. Place the coated sticks on a baking sheet and freeze for at least 30 minutes to prevent cheese from melting too quickly when frying.
  6. Heat vegetable oil in a deep skillet or fryer to 350°F (175°C).
  7. Fry mozzarella sticks in batches for about 1-2 minutes until golden brown and crispy, turning as needed.
  8. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  9. Serve immediately with warm marinara sauce for dipping.

Notes

For a healthier twist, bake the mozzarella sticks in a preheated oven at 425°F (220°C) for 8-10 minutes instead of frying.
